Yes! FYI: I read online that if you rinse canned lentils before using them in a recipe you can reduce the sodium on the label by about 35%. Hopefully that helps for other things, like my favorite GREEN BEANS. You guys remember when I binged and ate a whole can of green beans? lol I was so stressed out that day that I wanted to eat everything in the house, but told myself I would not binge on anything that would increase my blood sugar. I was and still am proud of myself for not going on a horrible binge that day. WooHoo!

Yep.. I feel like that sometimes when I eat an entire bundle of celery. I'll tell myself 'a binge is still a binge' but compromise my self berating behavior with 'it coulda been worse, ya know..'

I noticed this when I was putting in bean sprouts the other day, with the water in the can the sodium was MUCH higher, without the liquid it was like non-existent...I bet that's true for most canned veggies, beans, etc...

Deb, does the rinsing hold true for all foods? One of my splurge meals is a big bowl of jumbo or extra large shrimp. They're decent in calories but the sodium is simply obscene! Even though I know it wouldn't change what my records show here, it would be nice to know I was lowering the sodium some. I do rinse them now - I'm just wondering if it really makes a difference in the sodium.

So glad I did not eat cake or candy that day. I do not want to undo what I have been able to achieve so far. Going all the way to the goal weight, no matter how long it takes!

I think it's because canned things need preservatives to keep them from going bad?? Kinda like in the old days when they put salt on meat before refrigerators?? Maybe I'm way off but that's how I assume it works...

I always rinse shrimp and pat them dry before cooking. Not sure if it helps to lower the sodium or not. I have to go for my walk and will check back here later. Thanks for your support and comments!

That's interesting about the sodium. I've noticed that some Goya beans have low-sodium varieties. Great job on not binging on anything unhealthy, and for your weight loss today :)

Like you I rinse most of the canned veggies and beans that I use. Usually I go for dried beans and lentils that I cook in the crock pot. I soak the beans for a few hours first, rinse, cook and rinse again.

GREEN! You're GREEN! I don't eat much out of cans, but always rinse when I do. I'm sure that helps lower the sodium.

There is nothing wrong with eating a whole can of green beans, there is only about 70 calories for the whole can. Better to do that than eat a piece of bread and butter.

I never knew lentils even came in a can. I have always used fresh.

I always use dry lentils and cook them. I know rinsing legume type beans from a can reduces the salt. I usually cook my own from dry, but I do keep canned ones on hand and se now and then. I never ever use canned bean sprouts, fresh are o good.
