Okay... so, after weeks of consistent discipline and weight loss, I've slid the last few days. Nothing crazy. Just bumped my calories and carbs up and didn't work out like I have been. The good news: I didn't gain. I'd avoided the scale for the last couple of days, fearing the consequences, but climbed on today and feel like I've been given a nice break. Sure, I slipped up, but since I didn't gain weight, It's going to be easier to get back to losing weight by getting back to the same routine that's been working for me. Very thankful about this.

It's worth noting that when I was younger, I was a boxer, so I was always cutting weight. Then, in my twenties and early thirties, I would rely on that old habit to cut weight rapidly from time to time. Later, I'd gain it all back. I'm sure a lot of people on here can relate. But now I'm 46, and for the first time in my life, I've been using the slow and steady approach. I have peaks and valleys, but I've been slowly trending downward for the last thirteen months.

January 7th, 2015, was a huge day for me. It marked the release of my debut novel, PHOENIX ISLAND, and the CBS TV show based on it, INTELLIGENCE. At the launch party, someone took a picture of me at the signing table. I looked very, very happy -- all smiles -- but also very, very heavy for me. It was that picture that sparked my new commitment. That day, I weighed 226. Now, 13 months later, I'm 201. Not a huge loss for that amount of time, but paradoxically, I'm stoked about that. Eventually, I want to get down to my fighting weight -- literally. I hope to make it to 178, which is the limit for light heavyweight, where I boxed in my early twenties. It would be nice to snap my fingers and be there, but the fact that it's taking me longer to get there gives me confidence that once I arrive, I'll actually stay.

This all takes me back to the point that these last few days have been slide days -- but nothing like the slide days I used to have. No crazy overindulgence, and I recorded everything. No alcohol, no 3000-calorie days, etc... So yeah, the fact that I didn't gain, that's really encouraging to me, and it has vetted the overall approach, a kind of counterbalance to the days when I'd step onto the scale after having been perfect and having exercised hard only to see that I'd gained a pound.

The answer now, as then: stay the course.

The sequel to PHOENIX ISLAND comes out this August. I'm hoping to lose at least ten pounds by then. One way or the other, it's going to be cool to take a picture that day and put it side-by-side with the one that kicked off this journey!
