Yeah, this sucks but I knew it was going to be bad. Back in mid March I got really sick. I had zero energy, dizzy, sick to my stomach after eating. I couldn’t work out so I stopped and I stopped dieting because I thought that was the cause. After my trip I could barely get out bed I was so exhausted. Well after blood work I found out I had a toxic level of B12 in my system and it was causing all those things (in addition to working out too much with too little calories) I spent a month avoiding all B rich foods (made keto impossible). Doc says it will take a couple of months to lower the levels but I feel so much better the last 2 weeks. I’m eating protein and dairy again but I can’t have any fish. I’ve been able to exercise again. I’m trying to make sure I don’t eat too little calories. And I’m eating carbs so weight loss will be slow.

If calories are equated weightloss be slower on the scale but if you’re talking fatloss it’s the same rate. It’s just carbs keeps you more hydrated. Good luck!

how the heck did you get high B12, it's water soluble,?? I'm glad you're back. I hope you get this figured out. crazy!

Scary, Dawnie. Glad they figured it out and you have a path forward. Hugs.

Google said "High serum levels of vitamin B12 are often due to supplementation. However, in the absence of vitamin supplements clinicians often think of hepatic or renal impairment, or haematological or solid malignancies" 🤷 I was curious too. 🧐

I glad you are doing better scary stuff.

That’s very informative. I always thought if one had too much vitamin b the body would flush it out thru the urinary tract. Never heard of that before

I have high B12 count on my labs but not to the point where it makes me ill. I hope you feel better soon.

Protein Bars have a lot of vitamins added, including 100% of the USDA of B12. Some people eat these daily, along with the protein powder shakes, etc. It's overkill. Gotta read labels.

I'm sorry to hear you have had such a hard time. Glad you were able to find out what it was and now you can take the time needed to recover. 💜

Glad you found out the fix is easily correctable through a change in diet.

I’ve never heard of this either. My son actually found out recently he has low B12. He’s now on a supplement. Crazy how our bodies react to different things in different ways.

b12 is water soluble, so that's crazy! Try doing the starch solution diet. I lost weight and kept it off for 7 years doing it.

Momschool is absolutely correct. Recent research identified over 15 genes producing proteins transporting B12 from food to the cells, but only transcobalamin II can deliver it inside the cells. Therefore, a plasma B12 test can show total B12 bound to several proteins is too high, but due to a deficiency of transcobalamin II, very little gets inside the cells. This is why smart doctors test plasma or urine levels of methylmalonic acid (MMA) and homocysteine. Also, supplementing with cyanocobalamin requires converting it to methylcobalamin, while detoxifying cyanide.

Thank you for all your support advice and research!! I don’t supplement but I do occasionally drink protein shakes. And it turns out mine has 100% daily value so no more of that! I’m disappointed in my doctor. He gave not instruction on what to do about it other than limit food and drink more water. He never said what he thought caused it.

He probably just didn't have any idea what caused it but he should have admitted that he didn't know. Of course I guess admitting that he didn't know it might open him up to being sued 🤔. I believe that my optical-neurologist made a mistake, but she can't admit that she made a mistake for this reason. Personally I wouldn't have held it against her but I can understand the situation that she's in. Let me explain my reasoning when I went back to UK hospital 🏥 for my first appointment when they first prescribed me the heavy duty steroids 💪 in an attempt to save my vision in my right eye the grad student that was assigned under her asked her why she hadn't already prescribed me the steroids in the hospital when they had allowed me to go home as was recommended by the FDA. She stated that all the recommended by the FDA it wasn't required so they didn't have to send me home with steroids and so therefore she hadn't done so. She looked a sheepish 🐏 but otherwise dismissed the issue and moved on with the doctor's visit. I surmised that she probably should have sent me home with those heavy duty steroids (1000mg daily) a month prior and that it most likely would have saved the vision in the right eye. But if she had admitted to this in the doctor's visit she would have been liable and could have been sued. She just didn't know that it would have cost me my vision and thought that the optical neuritis would have resolved like it does in so many cases on its own she made a mistake. 🤷
